二湖　 Shiretoko's second　of five lakes: 森に包まれて。

We went today to Shiretoko five lakes and the Kamui wakka waterfalls.
Three of the lakes were closed due to recent bear sightings.
The ones that were open provided a feast for the eyes with striders, small fishes, a variety of insects, and the occasional deer.
Just being around these lakes inspired in me a whole new sense of reflection about how vital water is to all living things.
When leaving one of the lakes I had an unexpected encounter with a snake crossing my path.Fortunately for me it was in a hurry and had no time to mess with me.

Then it was on to the Kamui wakka waterfalls, the name meaning "God of water" according to the Ainu language. For those not familiar with the Ainu they are a native Japanese people who have inhabited Northern Japan from long ago. We splashed our way up through the warm acidic falls towards the top. We noticed at the base of the waterfalls that some people were enthusiastically playing. It reminded me of those special carefree feelings I had as a kid when I splashed around playfully in the water.
Once again I could feel that feeling again because of the water.

昨日は知床半島の五湖とカムイワッカ湯の滝に行ってきた。

五湖は名前の通り、五つからなる湖で、一湖、二湖、三湖.....というように単純に名前がついている。原生林の中の木道をてくてく歩いていく。途中、鹿やアメンボ、魚や鳥、蛇、毛虫、いろんな植物に出会った。木々は岩の上に根を張っている。知床は岩の半島なんだって。

湖の水は静かに漂っていて、静寂の中、ひっそりと美しかった

今回は三湖、四湖、五湖は、周辺でヒグマが出没中ということで、この時期はそこまでに行く小道が通行止めになっていた。なので一湖と二湖しか見れなかったけど、素敵な体験をしたと思う。

次はカムイワッカ湯の滝に行ってきた。水温が３０度くらいの温かい水の中をじゃぶじゃぶ歩く。
いくつかの小さな滝を上り、カムイワッカ湯の滝の、’一の滝’まで行ってきた。
カムイとはアイヌ語で神を意味し、ワッカは水を意味する。
神の水という意味なんですって。
天然の温泉。
滝壺で湯船のように湯に浸かったり、水遊びしたり、楽しかった。

小さな頃はこういう遊びをしていたのに、いつからしなくなったんだっけ？？

自然に触れて、水に触れて、
童心にかえった一日だった。
