This place was originally inhabited by mainly the native Ainu population.　
Then in 1883 the modern city was founded by the Banseisha, a group of colonial settlers from Shizuoka.
The popular local food here is Buta-donburi, delicious barbecue pork on rice.

You can order it at a place called Pancho, which is directly across from the train station. It is by the way the only dish on the menu. If you happen to visit the the restaurant be prepared for a long wait in line.

It is extremely popular with the locals and of course even with some of the out of town visitors.

ヒント：１８８３年に静岡からの開拓移民が、アイヌの人たちの本拠地だったこの土地を発見しました。
ヒント：元祖豚丼の老舗、”ぱんちょう”がある街。

ちなみに元祖豚丼のぱんちょうの豚丼は、先代がこの地で育った豚肉をさらに美味しく食べたいというこだわりから、苦労に苦労を重ねて完成させたものだそう。
創業昭和８年なんだって。
